Theatre for Young Audiences
Outreach Workshops for the 2008-2009
Season
Workshops for
pre K, Kindergarten ~ 2 grade
CREATIVE DRAMA:
Using
your imagination
This workshop
encourages students to stretch their bodies and their imaginations as they
participate in theater and movement games. Workshops promote listening
skills, communication skills, group decision making, and an understanding of
their own emotions and the emotions of others.
STORY THEATRE: Great Stories Come To Life
Story
Theatre is a form of theatre where narrator tells the story while others
perform it through mime or dialogue. Sometimes the narration is provided by
those who are acting out the characters, animals and inanimate objects.
Story theatre is a good way to study theatre or a specific play without
needing to memorize all of the lines.
Workshops for 3
~ 5 grades
CREATING A CHARACTER: Acting It Out
Characterization is art of creating
an imaginary person on stage. Students are introduced to the different
concepts of creating a character, and then have a chance to let their
imagination run wild and create their own imaginary characters.
CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP:
Imagination Jumpstarts
This
Creative Writing Workshop stimulates young writers with a series of writing,
and storytelling games designed to get students diving into their own
imaginations and writing stories based on the worlds that exist only in
their minds.
IMPROVISATION: A Hands-On Introduction
To Short Form Improv!
The success of the show “Who’s Line
Is It Anyway” brought a new interest in short-form improvisation to the US.
Improvisation is used by directors as a rehearsal tool typically, and the
fundamentals of improvisation help establish “good habits” on stage.
Workshops for grades 5 ~ 8
PANTOMIME: Creating A Physical Character And Environment
In this more advanced Pantomime
workshop, students learn how physical actions and characterization can
communicate character as well as environment and situation. Music is a very
practical and common component of Pantomime. Students work on communicating
through pantomime while using a piece of music.
IMPROVISATION: Creating a Scene
In a more advanced application of
the Improvisation workshop, students are exposed to more detailed
improvisation guidelines; most importantly the idea of “give-and-take” and
“acceptance” on stage
MUSICAL THEATRE: An Introduction To
Musical Theatre Movement
Choreography for Musical Theatre
can be based in any of the hundreds of forms of dance. However, certain
principles always apply to movement in Musical Theatre. Students work to
produce a short choreographed piece incorporating these principles.
